What Happens to Items That Don't Sell at an Estate Sale
Not everything sells and that's normal
Even at a great sale, some things are left over on Sunday night. The question families always ask is: "Then what?"
It depends on the company you hire. Here's how we handle it.
Donations
First choice for anything usable. We coordinate pickups with Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and local churches and shelters in the Willamette Valley. Furniture, clothing, kitchen items, books, and working electronics all get donated.
You get a donation receipt for your taxes. Depending on the volume, that receipt can be worth a decent deduction.
Consignment
For higher-value items that didn't sell because the right buyer didn't walk in that weekend, we can place them with local consignment shops or antique malls. This works well for art, jewelry, and quality antiques that need more time to find the right buyer.
Recycling and disposal
Broken things, stained mattresses, and genuinely unsalvageable stuff gets hauled away. We coordinate with junk removal services and make sure recyclable materials go to the right place.
Metal gets scrapped. Electronics get recycled through proper channels. We don't just throw everything in a dumpster.
The empty house
When we're done, the house is empty and broom-clean. That's part of the service. The family gets a check for the sale proceeds and walks into a house ready for the next step, whether that's listing it with a realtor, renting it, or renovating.
This is why you [hire a professional](/blog/hire-estate-sale-company-vs-diy)
DIY sellers don't have donation relationships, consignment connections, or hauling services lined up. They end up renting a dumpster and throwing away things that could have been donated. Or they leave the cleanup for later and "later" becomes months.
We handle everything. Contact us and we'll explain the full process, start to finish.
