What Sells Best at Estate Sales? Top Items Buyers Want

What People Actually Buy at Estate Sales

If you're getting ready for an estate sale or just wondering whether that garage full of stuff is worth anything, this post is for you. We've run sales across Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, and the rest of the valley, and certain things fly off the tables every single time.

Here's what we see.

Solid Wood Furniture

This is the big one. A well-made walnut dresser or a teak dining set from the 1960s? Buyers fight over those. Portland in particular has a huge appetite for mid-century modern furniture. But really, any solid wood piece in decent shape will sell.

Things that move fast: Danish modern teak, solid wood dining sets, antique dressers, leather sofas in good condition, vintage desks and bookcases.

Things that don't? Particle board anything. Those massive oak entertainment centers from the 90s. Heavily stained upholstery. We're honest about this upfront so you know what to expect.

Tools

If there's a garage or workshop involved, we get excited. Tools are consistently the fastest-selling category at every sale we run. Guys line up at 7 AM on Friday for a good tool collection.

DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, those are the names that move. Table saws, drill presses, hand tool sets, air compressors. Even basic garden equipment sells quickly if it's in working shape.

Kitchen Stuff

Cast iron is gold at estate sales. A Griswold skillet in good condition can fetch $50 to $200 depending on the piece. Le Creuset Dutch ovens, KitchenAid stand mixers, quality knife sets, all of it sells.

Here's one that surprises people: vintage Pyrex. Those Butterprint mixing bowls your grandmother had? Collectors pay real money for those. Same with old CorningWare.

Art and Collectibles

Original art sells well, especially at Portland sales where buyers have an eye for it. Signed prints, art glass from Murano or Blenko, handmade pottery. Coin collections and stamp collections draw specialized buyers who know exactly what they're looking at.

We had a sale in Lake Oswego last year where a collection of vintage advertising signs brought in more than the furniture.

Jewelry

Both fine jewelry and costume jewelry sell, though for very different reasons. Gold and silver pieces get priced by weight plus craftsmanship. Vintage costume jewelry from brands like Trifari and Monet has its own collector market. And watches sell whether they're working or not, especially Seiko, Citizen, and Omega.

The jewelry table is always the most crowded spot at any sale.

Outdoor Gear

This is Oregon. People fish, camp, hike, and garden. All of that stuff sells fast in the Willamette Valley.

Fishing rods and tackle boxes, camping equipment, bicycles (vintage Schwinn and Trek especially), patio furniture, Weber and Traeger grills. If it's related to being outside, someone wants it.

Vintage and Retro

Portland's vintage scene is real. Vinyl records sell consistently, especially rock, jazz, and blues. Old turntables and tube radios attract a specific crowd that knows what they want. Retro barware, mid-century lamps, vintage clothing. The 1950s through 1980s are the sweet spot.

The Stuff That Surprises People

Every sale, there's something the family almost threw away that turns out to be worth money. Sewing machines and fabric stashes. Vintage board games still in the box. Old Christmas decorations, especially the aluminum trees and vintage ornaments. Canning supplies and Mason jars. Stacks of National Geographic magazines and old maps.

You never really know until someone who collects the stuff walks through the door.

Getting the Best Price

Pricing matters more than most people realize. Too high and things sit there all weekend. Too low and you're leaving money on the table. We research comparable sales and current market values before we price anything. We also know how to stage items so buyers can see what they're getting, and we advertise to the people most likely to buy.
